The coin's provenance is ex. J. P. Mass and includes his original envelope. This coin is from the Wainfleet Hoard, deposited c.1200 and found in 1990 - with the British Museum describing the hoard as:
"...deposited between 1194 and 1205. Consisting of 380 silver pennies and 3 halfpennies it was worth £1, 11 shillings and 8 pence halfpenny, a considerable sum at a time an agricultural worker might earn a penny a day."
